The river Thames flows nearby and is a delightful place to stroll or take a bike ride along its banks. The river is tidal up to Teddington Lock and a boat can be taken from Tower Bridge downriver to Putney along the route the royal barge of Henry VIII would have taken passing Regents Park and Kew Gardens.
Trafalgar Square is probably one of the most popular historical sites in Britain. The palace was the home of Henry VIII where he had a court of some 600 people who all needed feeding twice a day from the royal kitchens. Vast amounts of food were required and somewhere in the region of 2000 pigs alone were consumed during a year. One party in a small village near Borehamwood remains firmly fixed in our memories. It was a quintessential English summer day; the pig was slowly roasting with a delicious aroma filling the air. One of the oldest pub in England “The Royal Prince” is situated on Clapham Common and dates back to Saxon times when the early Saxon settlers brewed ale on the site as there was a good supply of water from the well in the garden. When the ale was ready for drinking the alewife would hoist a green bush on to a pole to let all and sundry know that the beer was ready! Perhaps something similar could be fashioned when the pig or lamb is roasted and ready for eating. Maybe its head hoisted on the pole. It was in Clapham that we were first introduced to the game of eat the pig’s eyeball! This is a little like pass the parcel but involves the eyeball. When the music stops there is a choice between eating the item and popping some money in a box for charity. An extremely good way to raise funds!
